Is PVC Leather Real Leather?
This question comes up quite often.
Technically, no. PVC leather is not real leather. It's a synthetic material made with a fabric backing and a PVC coating.
But honestly, in real projects, people don't spend too much time on whether it's "real" or not.
Most of the time, the discussion is more practical. For example, what the product is used for, how long it needs to last, and of course, budget.
In some products-like boxing gloves, punching bags, or basic gym equipment-PVC is actually the more common choice. Not because it looks the same as real leather (it doesn't, especially if you look closely), but because it's easier to work with in production. The thickness is consistent, the supply is stable, and the cost is more predictable.
Real leather is different. It has variation. Some clients like that, especially for higher-end products, but it can also create issues when you need uniformity.
On the performance side, PVC does well in certain conditions. It handles moisture and surface wear reasonably well. That's why it's widely used in commercial environments.
At the same time, there are also some drawbacks. It's not very breathable, so for seating or products with long skin contact, it may feel less comfortable. Also, depending on quality, it can become harder over time or show cracks, especially in colder environments.
Real leather doesn't behave like that. It changes gradually, sometimes in a better way, sometimes not-it depends on use.
So in the end, PVC leather is not real leather.
But whether that matters really depends on what you're trying to make.
